The Advantages of Using LVL Timber in Building

Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) is an engineered timber product made from thin layers of wood veneers, bonded together using heat and pressure. Used for structural applications, including beams and rafters, it is a highly durable and hardwearing timber product.

LVL is the ideal replacement for steel and hardwood timber beams, and with a high strength-to-weight ratio, it is suitable in a wide range of situations. In this blog we discuss the main advantages of using LVL timber in building.

Features and Benefits of LVL Timber

Strength and Stability: Engineered to be stronger and more stable than traditional timber beams, LVL timber is ideal for use in load-bearing structures. In fact, LVL timber is comparable in strength to steel yet lighter and more cost-effective.

Versatility: LVL timber can be manufactured in a variety of sizes and lengths, making it convenient to use onsite and ideal for a wide range of building applications, from beams and headers to joists and rafters.

Sustainability: LVL engineered timber is typically manufactured from plantation-grown timber species, making it a sustainable option compared to solid timber.

Dimensional Stability: It is less prone to shrinkage, swelling, or splitting compared to solid timber. Unlike hardwood timber, LVL timber is manufactured for a consistent finish, making it a more reliable option for long-term structural integrity.

Tested for Structural Integrity

LVL timber is rigorously tested to meet AS/NZS 4357, verifying its structural integrity. These tests ensure that builders and trades are using a product that will withstand the structural loading intended. Each LVL should be stamped with identifiers to ensure it meet the requirements. The stamp should;

  • Note the Standard the product conforms to; AS/NZS 4357.0
  • Include manufacturer’s name or registered mark
  • Specify a structural property identifier or product name; if using an F-grade classification, include the F-grade
  • Note limitations for application
  • Ensure preservative treated branding complies with AS/NZS 1604.1
  • Specify adhesive bond type
  • Include the formaldehyde emission class.
