Waterproofing a Custom Home with Drizoro Products

By: Bowens

Waterproofing Case Study

In the construction of this ninety-three square metre custom home in Mt Eliza, Michael Pollock from Privilige Homes faced significant challenges regarding waterproofing for a large wine cellar and adjoining swimming pool. Given the project’s complexity and specific requirements, Michael turned to Bowens for waterproofing suggestions.

Bowens Product Innovation & Business Development Manager, Andrew Healey proposed Drizoro waterproofing products.

As Andrew explains: “Michael was looking at a few solutions but when we explained how easy it was to apply Drizoro and the fact that it could go onto a wet wall, that really ticked a lot of boxes for him.” Michael agrees, saying that it was huge plus to be able to apply Drizoro to green concrete and not have to worry about full curing.

Task Summary

The primary task was to waterproof a 15m x 6m wine cellar capable of holding 5,000 wine bottles, as well as a 103,000-litre swimming pool. Both areas presented unique challenges due to the property’s sloping terrain and the presence of a large Perspex window between the cellar and pool. Finding a waterproofing solution for both these areas was a high priority.

Bowens invited Bruce Leslie, the Australian distributor of Drizoro from Scientific Waterproofing Products, to visit the project and advise on the correct solutions.

Key Issue

The main challenge was to ensure seamless waterproofing across diverse surfaces and structural elements, maintaining durability and flexibility given the project’s scale and environmental conditions.

As Bruce explains: “We are dealing with many different surfaces including concrete block, concrete shotcrete and wood. Pipe protrusions coming into the pool were of particular concern as there would be vibration from pumps and water hammer which could cause issues.”

The Solution

Through collaboration with Bowens and guidance from Drizoro, Michael successfully implemented Drizoro products, MaxSeal Flex and Max Joint Elastic.

Max Joint Elastic, a flexible waterproof membrane, was applied to the pipes. When the product sets, not only is it waterproof but it is highly flexible, which is a huge benefit in this application.

“Whilst we put Max Joint Elastic around the pipe, we have a substrate that is very porous. We decided to use MaxSeal Flex on the concrete to ensure we have waterproofing continuity from the pipe all the way to the concrete”, says Bruce.

These solutions provided not only effective waterproofing but also flexibility and ease of application, ideal for meeting the construction timelines. With training provided from industry experts at Drizoro, the projects’ waterproofing was completed, ensuring long-term reliability and satisfaction for the client.
